grilled cheese sandwich recipe With Tomato Jam Stripe
- Total Time: 25 minutes
- Yield: 2 servings 1x
- Diet: General
Description
This recipe delivers a perfectly crisp, golden grilled cheese sandwich with a gooey cheese center, brightened by a sweet-savory tomato jam stripe. It’s a satisfying and family-friendly dish, transforming a classic into an unforgettable meal for busy weeknights.
Ingredients
- 4 slices sturdy bread (about 120g), such as sourdough or brioche, sliced about 0.5 inch thick
- 4 oz (115g) a good melting blend like sharp cheddar, creamy provolone, or nutty Gruyere, sliced or shredded
- 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, softened
- 0.25 cup (60g) homemade or store-bought tomato jam
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread: Lightly butter one side of each bread slice, ensuring edge-to-edge coverage.
- Build the Sandwich: Place two buttered slices, butter-side-down, into a 10-inch skillet or griddle set over medium-low heat. Layer each with half of your chosen cheese, then spread a generous stripe of tomato jam down the middle. Add the remaining cheese over the jam, then top with the second buttered slice, butter-side-up.
- Grill to Perfection: Cook each sandwich over medium-low heat for 3-4 minutes per side. Watch for the bread to turn a deep golden brown and the cheese to be completely melted and bubbly.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the heat and let them rest on a cutting board for one minute. Slice diagonally and enjoy immediately.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding a sprinkle of garlic powder to the butter. You can pre-assemble sandwiches (without buttering) and refrigerate for a few hours, or make tomato jam ahead. If cheese isn’t melting, reduce heat and cover pan for 1-2 minutes. Gluten-free bread and dairy-free cheese alternatives can be used. For lower sugar, use sugar-free jam or caramelized onions.
